01 — Our story
La Bae is the work of Kate Lieu, an aspiring fashion designer who turned a Hunter Street Mall shopfront into something closer to a gallery than a cafe: floor-to-ceiling white, textured unfinished walls, loungy chairs, and tables set with vases and candles.
That designer’s eye runs all the way to the table. Every dish arrives on its own crockery — quirky cups, considered cutlery — and the kitchen makes its sauces by hand. The matcha is premium organic powder sourced from specific growers in Japan and Thailand, chosen for the freshest possible flavour.
The result is an Asian-inspired menu that moves from cafe classics through to show-stopping croffle desserts and creative coffees — right in the middle of Newcastle’s CBD, on the pedestrian stretch of Hunter Street.
